Hayate the Combat Butler, Vol. 29

Hayate Ayasaki is a very good butler. That’s pretty much the premise of the entire manga. As a butler, he’s smooth, always knows what to do, and provides the girls he waits on with whatever they desire. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that’s why they fell for him, as in fact each of them has different, non-butler reasons for that. But it’s striking if only because in Hayate’s other role as a harem protagonist in a romantic comedy manga, he’s absolutely terrible. He’s very good in terms of what Hata needs to convey in the writing. But much of Hayate’s so-called “bad luck” can also be put down to wishy-washiness, cowardice, and the complete inability to understand the trembling of a pure maiden’s heart. It’s why we’re 29 volumes in and disasters keep piling up for him.

The disaster doesn’t happen in this particular volume, but we know that at some point in the near future, Ruka is going to discover that Hayate is a guy, and there will be hell to pay. Of course, this is played for max comedy – every time he thinks he can confess, she says the one thing that stops him from doing so – but it’s still a case where you want to put your face in your hands. She also, by the way, is trying to earn a large pile of cash to get herself out of debt because her parents are suckers – a similarity Hayate is quick to catch on to. It’s not the first time Hata has done this – Hina, too, has lost her birth parents due to “we abandoned you because of our debt” – but that at least had the excuse that it was part of his original outline for the series. Ruka’s past seems more like overegging the pudding.

The rest of the volume is for the most part a series of one-shots focusing on the cast, which I think Hata enjoys best. Alice talks with Hayate, and there’s some discussion of who she is, but not much – she says she’s lost her memories of Athena, but clearly knows she *is* Athena in some way. Also, don’t let dogs eat chocolate. Wataru and Saki also have money troubles, and even Sayaka literally loaning them a giant pile of money doesn’t help, particularly when Hayate gets involved. Speaking of Sayaka, she’s rather annoyed to find that the position of “Nagi’s (relatively) sane best friend) has been stolen by Chiharu, particularly since Chiharu is HER OWN MAID. As for Maria, well, she gets nothing to do except pose naked for the camera as pre fanservice, something Hata lampshades almost immediately. These are all pretty good chapters, not hilarious but quite amusing.

In the end, though, the plot will have to advance soon. Ruka will find out Hayate’s gender. Athena will eventually stop being a girl. And, one assumes, the manga will end. It’s coming to a close in Japan, but Viz still has a long way to go. See you in the fall for another volume.

Hayate the Combat Butler, Vol. 28

It is not uncommon for long-running harem comedy series to introduce a new girl who quickly captures the hearts and minds of fans who have grown weary of the natural staticness of a typical harem plot. Indeed, it’s not uncommon for Hayate the Combat Butler iteslf, as Athena grew quite popular when she was introduced, but she was part of Hayate’s tragic backstory, and also heralded a certain amount of drama. With Ruka Suirenji, a pop idol who apparently likes to sell doujinshi on the side, we get something more akin to the typical Hayate heroine, and much of the first half of this volume is about showing off how cute she is and how much chemistry she has with Hayate. Who she thinks is a girl, something that I’m sure will go bad for him later on.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the old favorites are getting ignored. To no one’s surprise, Athena has returned, though only for a brief cameo before we get introduced to Alice, a cute young girl who looks just like Athena did when she and Hayate were kids – a fact not lost on him, and clearly there’s some magic age-regression going on here. This ends up leading to some ship tease with Hinagiku after Alice (Athena’s child form) decides that Hayate and Hina are her mama and papa. (Best joke of the volume has Hayate wondering if it was that time when–and getting cut off by Hina with a sword to the head, as jokes about her chastity are a bit much even for her.) And even Maria, who’s been so absent from the manga lately that she’s slipped to 5th in the popularity poll (Athena is second, for the curious) gets a sweet ‘let’s go to the public baths’ scene with Hayate, who for once does not get accused of peeping.

This volume sees Hata starting to balance out his ongoing storylines and his desire to write gag comedy a little better than he has before. Aika appearing as Alice’s minder ensures there will always be a snarky comment handy, and even though she regresses a bit, Nagi is still able to see what a really dedicated writer of bizarre incomprehensible doujinshi can do. And there’s still room for one-shots, such as a typical day in the apartments implying that Hayate survives on one hour of sleep a night, or a drunken Yukiji winning the attention of manga artist Ashibashi (who we now see is actually named Koji as if it wasn’t obvious enough who Hata based him on). Rest assured that things are still funny, even as the plot grows more complex.

By now I highly doubt that Hayate is winning new readers, and its die-hards likely support the manga while also reading the scans online, which are about five years ahead of Viz’s release. But it is worth supporting This is a funny title that also has doses of sentiment and even a bit of action. It remains an underrated treat.

One of the stranger running plots we’ve had in Hayate the Combat Butler has been 13-year-old Nagi’s insistence on being a brilliant manga artist, an insistence that is counterbalanced by her actual manga, which is strange to the point of incoherence. This mas mostly been played for humor, focusing on Hayate and Maria’s attempts to not tsukkomi Nagi when reading her stuff, and pretend that it’s totally going to sell. Here, though, Nagi’s manga becomes the point of this next arc, as she runs into a genuine manga artist – mostly through the machinations of Ayumu – and discovers what a leap forward it would take for her work to achieve what a professional artist’s does.

We briefly saw this artist several volumes ago, but now we get a name – Ashibashi-sensei – and we see what the life of a manga artist actually entails. This also includes an assistant, who turns out to be Azumamiya, one of the many minor characters who littered the early volumes and have now mostly been forgotten. He’s here to be annoyed that they’re doing this for Nagi at all. In any case, Ashibashi-sensei is clearly based on Hata’s former mentor Koji Kumeta, author of Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei. There’s not quite as much despair this time around, but we do get to see how totally exhausted a manga author can get, the dangers of procrastination, and most importantly, how Nagi’s work just isn’t cutting it.

Nagi can’t even bring herself to show it to him – she runs off devastated, having received actual criticism she’ll listen to for the first time ever, as opposed to people trying to be nice (Hayate, Maria), or people with the same warped worldview as she has (Isumi). This leads to a serious crisis of confidence, particularly since, when Nagi decides to simply concentrate on school work, she notices her grades are slipping as well (though she’s still in the Top 10). Nagi’s maturity, or lack thereof, has been a source of frustration for many of the Western fans of Hayate. Honestly, I suspect for those fans the solution is so eliminate her entirely – character development is not what they want. But it’s what they see here.

Luckily, Chiharu comes to the rescue, asking Nagi to help her sell doujinshi at a local event. This allows Hata to throw in a couple of chapters praising the idea of doujinshi (here clearly referring to original works, not the parodies and porn most people associate the word with), and allowing Nagi to get her groove back, mostly as she reads a dolphin-based manga that’s even screwier than hers is. I like the idea that “I can do better than THIS!” is a motivating factor. We also see what I believe is the author of that particular manga, though why she’s in disguise is something that is likely left for the next volume. Hayate the Combat Butler continues to be lots of fun, and it’s good to see Nagi finally growing.
